I have some thoughts on investing in courses...

A very kind follower on Instagram DM-ed me the other day to ask about the Surface Design Immersion Course that I've been promoting. They expressed that they can't afford it right now, but felt anxious that it's not going to be available for another year. We talked more about their specific circumstances, and ultimately, I told them that I don't think it's worth it to sign up if they really can't afford it right now because the financial stress could make it hard to focus on the course anyway.

While I do believe in this course and am proud to be an affiliate partner, I also think that it’s important to only invest in the things that you, personally, feel really good and really excited about, and that you feel you can invest in smartly in that moment. If it doesn’t feel right for you in that moment, that’s okay! Yes you would have to wait another year for this particular thing to open up again, and that does kind of suck if you really want to take it, but it’s also not the end of the world and it doesn’t mean you have zero options.

Because what you can do is you can take this time to really focus on your artwork, because ultimately the most important thing for any artistic career is to improve your artistic skills through tons of practice and creating. It can be really hard to know who to trust online! I totally get that. I've taken a course in the past where I ended up feeling like it wasn’t really worth what I spent on it. It’s not something that makes me angry or frustrated, but it is still something that I feel didn’t really benefit me all that much, so a part of me wishes that I had taken a step back and not rushed into it.

Just to be clear, I don’t feel that way about Bonnie’s course at all. I do think it is very much worth it or I wouldn’t be promoting it, and if you feel excited about it (or any other course on your radar for that matter), then please by all means, go for it! But I also think that with any course, you shouldn’t invest in it if your motivation is coming from a place of fear.

I’m a huge proponent of online learning. Obviously. It has been hugely beneficial for my career. And I'm proud to promote Immersion while enrollment is open, but I also believe that you shouldn’t sign up for something just because you’re scared that if you don’t, you’ll fail. Because that's not necessarily true.

I know this blog post may seem counterintuitive to my promoting the Immersion Course, but it felt important to me to share the entire spectrum of my thoughts and feelings on investing in online courses, especially while promoting one myself.

I love and respect online learning. It is so much more affordable than traditional schooling (at least here in the U.S.), which I really appreciate. Online learning, and the Immersion course in particular, made things a LOT easier for me, but do what's right for you!

Thank you for reading. I appreciate all of you, whether you decide to join me in this course or not.

Love,
