I want to be clear...

I’ve been outspoken on my personal social media and I’ve shared resources and info about what’s happening in my Instagram stories (@melissaleedesign), but it didn't sit right with me that I have a blog and, so far, have been silent here.

I’ll be brief because my voice is not the voice that needs to be uplifted right now, but I wanted to make my stance clear. I stand with Black Lives Matter. I stand with protestors. I stand against police brutality and their unchecked power and lack of accountability.

A message to my white followers: We need to listen, learn, and strive to do what’s right. Bettering yourself and unlearning racism is a lifelong journey, and that’s okay. The sooner we accept that, the better. Having privilege does not automatically make you a bad person, nor does it mean you haven’t struggled, or that your struggles are meaningless. The fact of the matter is that it isn’t about you. If you want to be on the right side of history, know that refusing to acknowledge your privilege is a step in the wrong direction.

And if you're feeling frustrated by all this messaging of white privilege and feel an urge to focus on your frustration with that, rather than on what you should be focusing on (i.e. police brutality and murder), I implore you to please take a step back, reevaluate your priorities, and stop making it about you. You're part of the problem.

I don’t often like to discuss politics here, but this is not a political issue. This is about life. Black voices deserve to be heard and protected. If you can’t protest, donate. Make calls. There are many ways to fight this fight. We have to support each other. We need to do better. #blacklivesmatter
